Time as a tool of Mind

In a recent meditation session, I reached acceptance and understanding of some dharma talks I’ve recently heard/watched (links to talks at bottom). The concept is core to Buddhism; that of living in the present moment. That past and future are simply constructs of self/ego. For me it was a personal review of what I was doing whilst in the present that allowed this concept to open up.

I was sitting down meditating, but I had set a timer. This mp3 timer was something I put together in the past, which was silent in the present, but extending into the future there would be a chime to end the session. The acceptance/opening of the teaching is that time is a useful tool in life. To “create” a meditation timer, “time” is need. The acceptance is that there is only one moment; the present, with the tool of time holding access to the past and future.

It is the present moment that allows the linking of the moments, and access to other times when required. This differs greatly from living “in time”. This awareness is focused on the now, accessing the past and future, only when required. Using time in this regard is like using a tool for its correct function. An example of this is using a hammer to hit a nail in, but putting down the hammer after the nail is hit in. People do not carry around hammers with them permanently. By the same degree there is no need to hold onto the tool of time; it gets heavy. Use it when required.

Are we stuck in time is a talk by Robert Scott(youtube video below)

The other talk is Zencast 48, called surrender to the now, which is a teaching by Eckhart Tolle.
