The Secret to Growing Your Concentration

“Concentrate, it’s in your reach” (Placebo). Every activity in life requires concentration, thus, the greater your ability to concentrate, the greater your abilities in all of life.

This works due to a change in your decision making process. Decisions, through concentration are better thought out to their conclusions, empowering you to make better decisions from the offset. Enhanced concentration also improves work life; work is completed faster with greater accuracy, due to less distractions. You may even get a pay rise; there’s no downsides to growing your concentration.

To develop your concentration all you have to do is be present. Do not plan for the future, do not think of the past, do not wish to be elsewhere, be right here, right now. Fully engage in every task of your day, regardless of how mundane it is. Mundane tasks are the most useful tasks to utilize in growing your concentration. Once again, simply be present.

Meditation “describes a state of concentrated attention on some object of thought or awareness”. Whether it’s washing the dishes, walking, knitting or sitting still, awareness of that task is meditation. It’s not just chanting or for people dressed in robes. It’s not a scary or mystical practice. Two more acceptable and common forms of meditation in modern culture are Yoga and Pilates. These both utilize the breath as a tool of enhanced concentration, or meditation.

Take time for yourself right now, in this moment; to experience your concentration. To do this all you have to do is watch and feel your breath. Do no thing more, do no thing less. Take 3 natural breaths, in and out. Feeling air entering your nose, then feel it come out again. Don’t force the breath, let it happen, experience it as it is, in this present moment. Stop reading now and feel the beauty of life through the breath.
.......

Welcome back. Those 3 breaths you just took are a great way of growing your concentrating. Maybe next time see if you can go 4 or 5 breaths. If not, don’t get upset, try again late.

Breathing is something that we all have to do. Make use of this, and use it as your tool of concentration. Nothing extra is required, just your attention. If you would like to continue enhancing your concentration through breath, check out the Introduction to Meditation Sessions by Gil.
