Happiness Like a Buddha

“Everyone has the innate potential to become awakened and experience nirvana” is the Buddhist belief that we all contain the Buddha Nature. You have the potential to have peace and happiness like the Buddha.

Happiness Is Contagious
Happiness, like yawning and smiling is contagious. If you are happy, and share this with others, they will become happier. Then when that person talks to someone else, they will do so in a happier mood. You are the drop in a pond, sending small ripples outwards lightening and radiating happiness as they spread. All these small ripples begin from you sharing your happiness and peace with others. You create endlessly outwards ripples of happiness, peace and compassion when you connect with others. Do not bottle up happiness for yourself; share it with those you interact with. Your positive energy will ‘zap’ them out of a trance and so it spreads.

The person who benefits most from the opening and sharing of your happiness is YOU. The contagious happiness and peace you radiate outwards will reflect back towards you. When you are happy, those around you will be happy with you. There is a Buddhist principle called Indra’s Net dedicated to explaining this concept. The short version is everyone is effected and effects everyone else. This is also why you must be very wary of negative people and environments, they will reflect inwards on you.

A Simple Way To Bring Happiness To A Negative Environment

Personally, my workplace has been a bit negative and depressing of late. Like any workplace, there are great people, but sometimes just a few too many not-great people. Trying to redress the mood of the office place, I started an experiment; a Zen Garden placed at the exposed corner of my desk. The reaction has been amazing. About 7-8 times a day, each day, people who felt a bit tense comes around, rake and chat.

The difference in the people’s mood, energy and mind states is amazing. They all comment on how funny it is but how they ‘feel better’ after using it. I sometimes also chat a bit to them about zen/dharma whilst they are around if I have time. This is planting seeds in them, and when the time is right for them, they will join the path.

Make The Effort
Make a conscious effort to share your happiness with others for a week. Make the effort to uplift the moods of your environments, and feel how easy it is to keep the ball rolling once it’s started. Your Joy will be contagious, and theirs will be for you. Sharing your joy is the practice of a Buddha. You are a Buddha already, waiting to breakout. Practice like a Buddha and you will become your Buddha nature.
