Why Workplace Happiness is Important

Careers staff have been saying it for years “do what you love“. Doing what you love makes you happy, and being happy in the work place is important.

In a place where you spend a 1/3rd of your waking day, your workplace happiness makes all the difference. Working in a job you dislike, makes the day feel longer, you become more frustrated about the way things are, and you’re also less productive. A common understanding is when unhappy; you’re also more likely to get sick, just as an added bonus. Before even looking at workplace happiness, workplace unhappiness looks pretty scary.

Working in a positive, happy work place, not only are you more productive, less sick and seeing time fly, there’s other aspects. The happy work is more willing to invest time, and make things better, instead of watching things go by. His relations with workers are more fruitful, developing deeper in relation.

Creativity and ideas come from peaceful, happy places. This is exactly what businesses are created out of; ideas. The traditional office model of 4 walled grey cubicles leaves no room for flow or development. No one wants to feel restricted or caged in, people like to explore and express themselves. This is something Joel got right when designing his new office. One of his requirements; The office should be a hang out: a pleasant place to spend time. If you’re meeting your friends for dinner after work you should want to meet at the office. The upside of this is he’s now able to “recruit the kinds of superstars that produce ten times as much as the merely brilliant software developers.” Here’s some great ways to ‘pimp’ out your workplace.

From my perspective, working in a mundane work place attracts mundane people. It attracts unconscious minds who feel life happens to them, rather then it being something they create. Problems are thrown over fences instead of being addressed. It’s not enjoyable, and it’s quite tiring. To remain skillful in Right Speech and Right Action in such negative environments may be too much at this stage. You have to be able to look after yourself, before you can help others.

Ego is afraid of change, and would rather see you unhappy and earning material status. Work through this, and work in a happy workplace. Being around like minded people uplifts, pushes, and inspires you to do your best. You will grow as a person and be happier for it. What usually ends up happening, so I hear, is the money follows, but by then, it no longer matters.
