Why you should meditate is a question that keeps coming to me. I feel lucky to be asked such questions, that people are curious in meditation, or they see some change in me and want to know more about it. To each person there’s a different answer, depending on their understanding and their circumstances. Below, however, is a general overview on why you should become a meditater.
Meditation means to concentrated attention on some object of thought or awareness. The Western world seems to see meditation as something either Eastern, Mystical, or Religious. There’s a stigma surrounding the word, which is why I’m very excited to hear people around me raising the topic. Swapping the word Meditation for ‘Sitting’ seems to removes a lot of the stigma and allows us to answer the Why.

We spend so long living in the external world concerned with looks, appears and material, yet we spend no time looking at how we are on the inside. Meditation is the tool used to help address this imbalance by looking at the nature of one’s own mind. By placing the spotlight of attention, or mindfulness on the mind, the mind becomes lighter, without doing anything.
When you meditate, all parts of life benefit. By meditating, when you begin to understand your own nature and your own mind, you’ll begin to live in harmony with your body and mind. When you live in harmony with your mind and body, everything comes together. Some of the sideline benefits of understanding your own nature, your own mind are below. This is not something that happens to 1 in 10, or 1 in 2, but everyone who pays attention to their mind, everyone who looks at how their internal state will get results.

- give us the confidence to acknowledge our thoughts without being hooked by them

Hi – I’m enjoying your blog. I found you by following an urbanmonk post. I have meditated. Only recently going to try again. Thinking about doing it tomorrow or next day at the top of a mountain here in Thailand. Nice quiet place I’m hoping. Anyway – I’ll try to write something at the blog about it as it’s going on – depending whether I have internet on the phone or not up there.
