Say Yes to Life and Grow

Whenever asked a question, you face 2 options. To say YES and Grow, or to say No. By answering YES to a question, regardless of what is asked, you are opening a door or path to some future action. Regardless of the experience, it is something greater than doing nothing. Wisdom is gained through experience; experience is gained through saying yes to offers.

When saying no, you do far more than say a word of two letters. Your entire organism – glandular, nervous, muscular – gathers itself together into a condition of rejection( Public Speaking for Success). The Yes Man is a whole book exploring saying yes to every question for a whole year. The author ended up saying yes to a BBC meeting that would otherwise be dull, and ending up making his own show!

Blink:The Power of Thinking Without Thinking demonstrates this with an Improvised scene between two actors over two takes.

Take 1;Closed/No styled scene
A: I’m having troubles with my leg.
B: I’m afraid I’ll have to amputate.
A: You can’t do that, Doctor.
B: Why Not?
A: Because I’m rather attached to it.
B: (Losing heart) Come on, man.
A: I’ve got this growth on my arm too, Doctor.

Take 2;The same two actors, this time saying yes, Opening the scene full of possibility
A: Augh!
B: Whatever is it, man?
A: It’s my leg, Doctor.
B: This looks nasty. I shall have to amputate.
A: It’s the one you amputated last time, Doctor.
B: You mean you’ve gotten a pain in your wooden leg?
A: Yes, Doctor.
B: You know what this means?
A: Not woodword, Doctor!
B: Yes. We’ll have to remove it before it spreads to the rest of you.
A: Collapses in his chair.
B: By God!, it’s spreading to the rest of the furniture.

Here are the same two people, with the same level of skill, playing exactly the same roles, and beginning almost exactly the same way. This is because good improvisers, accept(ing) all offers made.

Try saying YES to a new experience. When you next get the feeling to shutdown and say no, regardless of who or what is asked, say Yes. Venture outside of your comfort zone, experience and grow. You maybe surprised where you end up.
