How to Meditate is a big question. One that’s no longer just effecting a few people in private according to Google. It appears to be one of the hottest issues of our time, up there with who is god, and what is love. These are the big issues found by Google in the 2007 Zeitgeist, capturing what they call our “collective consciousness”.
The process used at Google collected billions of search queries through out the world, and then this table is made up with the fastest growing terms being searched for. This shows the burning questions, they show what’s really going on.
What does this mean?
It means something, something big. For the first time in history, we have a vehicle for seeing how we’re doing. We have eyes that can see people waking up, we can see the amount of seeking, or searching in this case, going on. We can now see that a good portion of the globe are wanting to find out more on Mediation. This means that people are turning to spirit, they are finding their lives empty and wanting in on what is working for so many.
What’s written on How to Meditate
It’s also funny on how little is still written on this topic. There’s a great wealth of seekers, but I dare say not much finding on the topic. How to Meditate returns 326,000 results by Google, What is Love, however, gets 49,100,000 results. That’s a bit of a jump. Looking on Google’s Keyword tool, I see that both phrases are highly competitive terms, meaning the advertising market/money is behind this. Also looking there I can see the search volumes for the two terms. Both are very close in terms of what’s being searched for.
It marks it a very strange time for the world. We are bottom heavy in this search. The balance is distorted, hopefully slowly coming back(check out the blog roll for more). The thirst for help is high.

Hi Wade,
Interesting, the first book I got on meditation was called How to Meditate. I had to choose from a whole shelf, and that book looked the most simple and friendly. It was by Lawrence LeShan. I think Dan borrowed it.
I do think stillness, meditation/silent contemplation is what America needs, more than pharmaceutical drugs and everything. I’m gonna start up a new blog soon. I’ll keep you posted.
Peace,Allison
Very interesting starting point
Of course it was from you or Dan
Excellent, do keep me linked in.
Peace,
Wade
I think (feel) we’re definitely coming into (or are in) a period of awakening. And honestly, I’m not surprised. Wade, was you mention, people are finding their lives empty. With so much materialism and societal pressure to be more than you are, people are beginning to look for inner growth and development.
I hope with this awakening we also see some changes in the way people start to think.. perhaps a paradigm shift in our societal behaviour. Maybe an alternative ‘Brave New World’ awaits?

I may have misunderstood the intent of this post and the comments above but may I suggest that this is in fact all quite meaningless. Search engines are peculiar beasts. Type in “Meditate” and you get 5,240,000 results, type in “Meditation” and you get 45,000,000 results. It means nothing however, for one simple reason. Despite the fact that we have at our disposal, more information than humanity has ever had in its history, we are no wiser in discerning the good from the bad. And if you can’t tell the right from the wrong then where is the value?
I will tell you what would really impress me. If one day we would search “what is love” or “how to meditate” or “what is truth” or “what is the meaning of life” and google came back with just one result and it was the same link for all these questions.
Humanity has always been seeking. It’s in our nature, Oneness seeking to know itself. On the plane of existence this seeking takes the form of seeking money, love, sex, drugs, pain, pleasure, god, religion, enlightenment, work, food, sleep, even information. We seek, that’s what we do. The fact that google can pinpoint what it is we are seeking doesn’t mean we are seeking more now than in the past. And don’t be fooled into thinking that knowing about it is any more useful.
If we want to awaken humanity then awaken our selves. That is all we need to concern ourselves with. And to awaken, our goal should not be to acquire knowledge but to rid ourselves of ignorance (false knowledge). We don’t need google for that. I don’t know much but I am quite confident that what we truly seek, that undescribable whatever, is not on the internet … or is it?
@Scott this even seems to confirm your suspicions. We live in a time of hope and change.
@Cedric,
I’m trying to say a few related things here. One is a ‘hot trend’ for 2007 world wide is an interest in how to meditate. This did not exist last year, this is a new development. To me this is exciting that more people are beginning to practice. Got to be a good thing for the globe!
The search and results go together. There’s a similar amount of people searching, yet there’s a lot higher finding for love, than meditation. It’s not so much the numbers by themselves..
May all beings be happy. May all beings have peace.

This is an interesting subject. It is difficult to determine if a higher percentage of people are seeking enlightenment now than in the past or if they are just using different means to get there. The internet is a huge, relatively new tool for seekers. I have found many beautiful teachings that I may never have if not for the internet…the Bhagadvad Gita, downloadable seminars, teachings of Tolle, even my introduction to Buddhism. The list goes on and on. All of this is available through other means but the access to it is so much more convenient now. Cedric, you are right that what we truly seek is not the internet but it is one more tool that can help people on their path. It is a convenient tool that is allowing teachings to become available to millions more than ever before in history. I agree that it can be difficult to find things on search engines that sound true but if you weed through the mountain of stuff you can find some beautiful things.
I have found from my own personal experience that some methods work better than others. What works seems to changes at different stages in my life. What is on the internet may not work for everyone but it opens doors for others at a faster pace than might otherwise be possible.
I don’t know if we are in a new age of awakening but I do hope we are.
Hi Jerry,
That’s a very interesting perspective. It could equally be a medium shift.
Regardless if it’s people changing mediums, or people starting to search, what Google’s showing is a huge rise in the numbers of people who in 2007 did one or the other, or perhaps even something else.
Peace,
Wade
